SHUTTLE SERVICE
Upon arrival in Elba, on May 25th, there will be a shuttle
service from the ferry landing in Portoferraio to Grand Elba
Hotel International in Capoliveri. The service will be held
from 3pm to 7pm of May 25th, approximately every other
hour. The meeting point is Agenzia Tesi Viaggi, Calata Italia
8, at walking distance and located in the ground floor of the
tallest building facing the harbor (it's easily
recognizable).
GENERAL INFORMATION
FUN 2004 concerns, to a general extent, the use, design and
analysis of algorithms and data structures. In particular of
interest are results that provide amusing, witty but nonetheless
original and scientifically profound contributions to the areas
of approximation algorithms, biological algorithms,
combinatorial algorithms, distributed algorithms, evolutionary
algorithms, geometrical algorithms, mobile algorithms, network
algorithms, optimization algorithms, parallel algorithms,
randomized algorithms, and web algorithms, just to name a few.
CONFERENCE VENUE
The conference will take place in a resort of Isola d'Elba
(Tuscany, Italy), a Mediterranean island famous for its white
sand, deep blue sea and fascinating nature. Ancient Romans were
the first to choose the island as one of their favourite places
to spend their holidays. The island became the small kingdom of
Napoleon as witnessed by some local, historical places.
At the end of May, typical temperatures are in the mid-20's C
(upper-70's F), cooling down in the evening. More detailed weather
report and webcam views are on-line. The Island of Elba is
in the Middle European time zone, GMT+1. The electricity supply
is 220 volts, 50 Hz. No visas are required for visitors of EU
Schengen countries and some other countries. Please contact the
Italian
Embassy or Consulate in your home country for any
further information.
TRANSPORTATION
The most convenient airport to reach the Island of Elba is "Leonardo da Vinci" intercontinental
airport, located in Fiumicino, near Rome, serviced by the major
world airlines. A shuttle service connects Leonardo da Vinci to
Roma Termini (central railway station). The ticket price is
euro 9.30, and non-stop shuttles leave every 60 minutes and,
during rush hours, every 30 minutes. The trip takes 40 minutes.
From Roma Termini, it is advisable to take a train to Campiglia
Marittima, which can be reached in about 2:30 hours. At this
point, Piombino Scalo can be reached in about 30 minutes by
commuting in Campiglia Marittima. Fortunately, it is possible to
make plans for the train
connections on-line (look for connections from "Roma
Termini" to "Piombino Marittima"). Trains stop right near the
harbor of Piombino.
Once reached Piombino, connections to Portoferraio (the harbor
of Isola d'Elba) by ferry boat (about 1 hour) or by air-craft
(30 minutes) are always available during day time.
Toremar and Moby
Lines are the major boat companies. We strongly recommend
early reservation on ferries for those willing to bring a car.
Reservation and informations are also available at the tour
operator desktop, Tesi Viaggi,
or by sending directly mail to the person in charge,
Antonella Giuzio,
phone (+39)0565.93.02.22, fax (+39)0565.91.53.68. The tour
operator will also provide a shuttle service from Portoferraio
to the conference hotel, Grand Hotel Elba
International, Baia della Fontanella, Capoliveri, phone
(+39)0565.94.61.11, (+39)0565.94.66.62. The distance is approximately 16 km (about 15-20 minutes at driving distance).
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
The official currency in Italy is the Euro. Exchange bureaus can
be found at local banks or at the airport; banks are open Monday
to Friday, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Currency exchange values are
available on-line.
