Travel Information

The large network of railways and motorways provides convenient access to Pisa from main Italian cities. Moreover, thanks to its International Airport and to the one of the not-so-far city of Florence, Pisa can be easily accessed from most Countries.

Coming by plane:
Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei) Daily flights connect Pisa Galilei international airport with several national hubs (e.g. Milan, Rome), as well as with Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Munich, and Paris.

Pisa airport is only 5 minutes away from town. The best way to travel from the airport to your hotel is probably by taxi.

Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci) Florence international airport is just an hour away by train from Pisa and provides direct connections with Amsterdam, Barcelona, Basel, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Nice, Paris, Timisoara, Wien, and Zurich.

Florence airport is located 4km out from the city centre. The railway station Firenze S.M.Novella can be reached:

  • by taxi (in about 15 minutes);
  • by taking the bus shuttle Volainbus, which leaves every 30 minutes from the airport (the ticket costs 4 € and it must be bought on board, the trip takes about 25 minutes). The timetable can be found at the ATAF site by selecting the route "Volainbus (airport shuttle)" from the Routes guide list. Note that the italian version of the page gives additional information.
Coming by train:
Timetable Italian Railways Pisa railway station provides frequent direct connections with many Italian destinations, including Genoa, Florence, Rome and Turin (see the official timetable). There are three train stations in Pisa:
  • Pisa Centrale: it is the main one, located in downtown;
  • Pisa San Rossore: located near the Leaning Tower;
  • Pisa Airport.

You should avoid Pisa San Rossore, since it is a small station with no bus nor train connection.

Instead, from both Centrale and Airport you may easily get a bus to the town center (the ticket is pre-paid, and should be bought at a local vendor or vending machine; its cost is roughly one euro), or a taxi to your hotel (the fare should be less than ten euro).

Coming by car:
Italian Motorway Network Pisa is near the intersection of two highways:
  • A12 north-south (Sestri Levante - Livorno),
  • A11 east-west (Pisa - Florence)
Exit at "Pisa centro" and follow the indications towards the center of the town. You can visit the official page of the Italian motorway network to view traffic prediction and advices. Please remember that Pisa is a small town with several pedestrian areas. Parking may be a problem and most parking areas are with pay-meters.

Pisa

Pisa is a small city (about 100,000 people live here) in the Tuscany region in Italy. Beside its leaning tower, Pisa is also well known for its University, which has been founded in 1334.

Pisa has a medieval historical center, and every place you will need or want to reach is within walking distance from your hotel.

A searchable map of the city is available at Virgilio.
