Motivations

A (Grid) computation requires three kinds of resources: Storage, Computing, and Communication resources.

Grid aware applications need to know the characteristics of such resources, in order to setup their execution environment.

The goal of the GLUE collaboration is the production of a common descriptive layout for such characteristics, to interoperate European and US Grid projects.

The understanding of Storage and Computing resources is presently sufficiently precise to be translated into database schemas, and used for early experiments in optimization.

Modeling communication resources is more complicate since:

  • we need to simplify the N**2 complexity of the interconnection structure;
  • we want to model differentiated services;
  • we want to describe (and control) the measurement infrastructure.
