We are currently witnessing an ever growing merging of Computer Science and Communication, both in academic and in industrial settings. The intelligent communication network concept is an example of this phenomenon. In this setting, algorithms play a key role in many issues of the design and management of communication systems. Unfortunately, the algorithmic results for communication systems are scattered, and there is not a unique place in which such algorithm related issues are presented and discussed. The need to put together all the people working on algorithmic aspects of communication is growing.

The purpose of the proposed workshop is twofold. First it will provide a good opportunity for the academic and industry communities to meet for a fruitful cross fertilization and exchange of ideas with the goal of assessing the current status and of identifying future directions. All problems related to the design and management of communication networks that require non trivial algorithmic solution are of interest.

Topics of interest include:

- Efficient access to optical bandwidth
- Efficient collective information in optical trunk networks
- Bandwidth routing on demand
- Location management of mobile users
- Dynamic channel assignment
- ATM network layout
- Distributed Algorithms
- Communication Complexity
- Algorithms for secure communication

Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (no more than 12 double spaced single sided pages using 12 points fonts) describing original unpublished material. Electronic submission is encouraged. In this case, send a cover e.mail message indicating author(s), title, and e.mail address of the corresponding author, followed by a separate message containing the paper in PS format (only this format will be accepted for electronic submission) to:bonucce@di.unipi.it. There will not be proceedings of contributed papers; abstracts of contributions will be distributed at the conference. Selected papers will appear in the Telecommunication Systems Journal.
