EuroSearch

Abstract:Subject-oriented browsing has been introduced by the Yahoo service, which partitions the Web information space into distinct subject categories meaningful to Web users. Web documents are then classified according to this scheme. The classification is done manually, partly by the maintainers of Yahoo and partly by the users or information providers themselves. However, the manual classification procedure used in Yahoo not only requires a vast amount of intellectual work, it also suffers from the fact that a significant part of the database content is outdated.

What is EuroSearch?

The EuroSearch project aims to help restore the linguistic and cultural equilibrium on the Web by building a pan-European federation of national search and categorization services. Initially comprising services from Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, the EuroSearch federation will constitute a distributed, multilingual searching service, permitting users to enter queries in their own, or their preferred language, and to carry out search and information retrieval over some or all of the federation's national sites.

Another important goal of the project is to facilitate the creation of Web catalogues, by developing techniques for the automatic categorization of documents. In this way, even small corporates will be able to develop their own catalogues, best reflecting the local culture within the federation.

The overall architecture has been designed with the objective to be open and extensible to new European search engines and new languages
